This is my first year doing NaNoWriMo and I am both super excited and super nervous. I usually hate giving myself deadlines because I rarely am able to meet them, but I think I’m going to try this out and see how it is! Anyway, I found this lovely NaNoWriMo tag on Sophie’s Corner, so check out their post as well! Let’s do this!!
Tell me about your NaNoWriMo project this year! Give me a blurb!
I absolutely suck at writing fancy blurbs, so forgive me for this one:
Always having lived a privileged and safe life, Leila is sent to Palestine by her family after a serious falling out. Here, she experiences first-hand the brutal occupation she had only ever heard about in the news and in her family’s stories. In Palestine, she moves in with a family who has known her own for generations. In a land that seems both home and foreign at the same time, Leila must adapt to her new life, as well as learning a whole new side of her identity and history. It doesn’t help that one man in particular seems content on making things as hard for her as possible: her soon-to-be husband.
Firdaus has spent his entire life under occupation. It is all he knows, and sometimes he thinks it is all he’ll ever know. All he has left now is his family, his village, and his community. So when a woman from God-knows-what foreign country moves in with them, Firdaus becomes all too aware of his lack of opportunities. She is a storm in human form and Firdaus doesn’t like it one bit. It doesn’t help that his parents are now playing matchmaker, or that the occupying forces have been stirring up more trouble than usual…
tropes: enemies to lovers, forced marriage, found family, grumpy man x outgoing woman.
What’s the genre?
Contemporary romance! I love reading romance novels and I just knew that I had to write a romance story set in Palestine. It will, of course, have serious tones throughout because of the setting, but it would also have comedy (at least I think so lol)!
Describe your MC in three words.
Leila: loyal, determined, steadfast
Firdaus: rebellious, vengeful, aggrieved
Without spoilers, describe your villain in three words.
Powerful, cruel, relentless.
What is your goal? (the traditional 50K? 20K? 5K? or……. 100K?)
I’m aiming for 20k right now since this is my first year doing NaNoWriMo and I don’t want to put too much pressure on myself. I’m also a full-time university student so that is my first priority. However, part of me is secretly hoping to hit 50k!! I’d be happy with anything though, honestly.
Is this your first draft? Second? Third?
Are you starting a new project (or draft), or continuing an existing one?
This is a new project! However, I’ve had the story in my mind for a while now, and have been planning it out for the past few weeks. I even have a couple of short scenes written down already, but nothing too serious! I’m waiting for NaNoWriMo to truly get into it and start writing properly.
What is your favourite time to write in the day?
The night, definitely. I’m a night owl in general so that is when creativity hits me hardest. I also write my best at night because there are so few distractions, and I absolutely love the quiet.
Where are you going to write?
Home, mostly. But also at my university, my local library, and maybe even Tim Hortons. Basically, all my go-to places for studying.
Computer or paper?
Computer! I also tend to write my thoughts and ideas on paper a lot if my Mac isn’t nearby. Sometimes just physically writing out ideas and scenes helps me figure them out better.
NaNoWriMo is a huge commitment!! How are you going to make time to write?
I’m a full-time university student and have also started a new job so making time might be hard. But I have most weekends and evenings off, so that should help! I’m usually always developing ideas and scenes in my head and try to write them down on paper whenever possible!
Are you going to participate in local or online NaNoWriMo events? (e.g. kick-off parties in your city, write-ins, virtual writing springs…)
Oh God, no. I’m a very stay-at-home person, and I think I’d rather just do my own thing. Again, this is my first year so I don’t want to put too much pressure on myself to try everything. Maybe next year?
Do you write from beginning to end or skip around?
I skip around. A lot. I usually get an idea for a scene that is further along in the story and I jump to write down my thoughts before I forget them – again, which is why I write a lot of ideas and scenes on paper. This also helps me develop the plot and storyline and figure out how to go about things.
Planner or pantser? (or plantser?)
I would say I’m a plantser, tbh. I love planning but sometimes I’ll just go with whatever pops into my head whilst writing.
What will be your go-to NaNoWriMo snack?
My go-to snack for absolutely anything is always pretzels.
Choice of caffeine? (or no caffeine?)
I don’t really drink much coffee anymore but I’ve been loving the French Vanilla from Tim Hortons, so maybe that?
Any rewards for milestone achievements? For finishing NaNoWriMo?
I think I’ll buy something I’ve been eyeing for a while, who knows! We’ll see when we get there lol.
Share a tip for other NaNo-ers!
I don’t think I’m the best person to be giving tips to others since, again, this is my first time doing NaNoWriMo myself. But I would say to just enjoy yourself and talk to others about their projects!
How are you feeling about NaNoWriMo? (Excited?! Nervous?! Terrified?!)
I am feeling a storm of emotions, mainly excited and terrified! But I’m also super happy I decided to do NaNoWriMo this year!
Share an aesthetic for your NaNoWriMo novel!
I’ve been making quite a lot of aesthetics for this wip but here’s one I really love! I’ll share more once NaNoWriMo starts.
I’m not tagging anyone specifically, but if you want to do this then please go ahead!
